Best I can find, but... its not Mainstage [Updated]
My 2.0 Review Update:
-----------------------
This version is a huge improvement and a big step towards "MainStage for iPad."
My favorite SampleTank 2.0 improvements:
1. Key-range limits per part.
2. Ability to name multi presets.
3. Eight parts, up from 4, in the multi setups.
4. Better use of iPad Pro resolution.
I still dont see InterApp audio hosting (i.e., the ability to call out to Auria apps for sound generation for some parts.) However, the sound selection here is good enough that that is not a fatal flaw.
I am a little disappointed that I just bought all of the 1.x sound packs and now 2.0 uses the new Pro pack at $39.99. However, the sounds I bought are still there. I just wish Id known this was coming.
Ive tried using Cubasis or Auria as iPad-based synth workstations and they just dont work. While they can use InterApp audio, they dont respond to MIDI program change for selection of presets, which I trigger using Set List Maker. Auria doesnt keep tracks armed on load, making it unsuitable for live use.
If you want something approaching MainStage for the iPad, SampleTank appears to be the best option by a good measure at this point.
My 1.x Review:
---------------
I want Mainstage for iPad. It doesnt exist. Cubasis will let you set up multi-controller rigs, but "patch changes" are too cumbersome. SampleTank provides feasible live patch changes, but is a closed universe if you are using it as the top-level app.
I think SampleTank really needs:
1. Support for hosting of InterApp audio apps (i.e., let SampleTank Part B of a preset be the Moog Model 15 app).
2. Key ranges per part to allow single-MIDI-channel-controllers to have splits.
3. Support for iPad Pro resolution.
4. Removal of the maddening default assignment of loops to lower keyboard keys.
5. Graphical refresh.
